Functions to Help Build the Church

Passage for Today

Acts 2:42-47

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Questions

  1. What were the activities of these new Christians?
  2. How can we make room for the Holy Spirit today in our individual homes?
  3. Where did the breaking of bread take place?

Devotion

By Danny Sathyadass

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship,  to the breaking of bread and to prayer.…Acts 2:42

A simple way to remember the functions that spiritually strengthen the church, is TEAMS which is an acronym for Teaching; Evangelism; Adoration; Mentoring; Sharing

Teaching: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching…Acts 2:42. This was the first evidence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the 3000 who were saved. They were committed to learning and listening. Whatever we do and say needs to be grounded in God’s word.

Evangelism- The words evangelist and evangelize, means “to preach, to proclaim the good tidings, to tell the good news.”  Though it is God who ultimately draws and adds people (And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved Acts 2:46). the apostles’ obedience to Christ’s command cannot be discounted. (Mark 16:15) May we joyfully obey this mandate to spread the story of Christ.

Adoration: They devoted themselves … to prayer Acts 2:42; …praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people Acts 2:47. Both these verses emphasize the need for prayer and praise which reveals the need for us to acknowledge God’s greatness and sovereign rule over all. When we come together let there be consistent times devoted for prayer and praise.

Mentoring: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching …Acts 2:42 The people placed themselves under the authority of the Apostles who functioned as coaches or mentors. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, …Acts 4:34,35. The early followers recognized the value of the Apostles’ insight, wisdom and leadership. May we intentionally choose to be mentored by those who are experienced and model Christ.

Sharing- They devoted themselves … to fellowship. Acts 2:42; The word fellowship means sharing or joint participation which is further described in Acts 2:44-46. May we like the early church, share our life and material goods to even those beyond our immediate circle of influence.

These functions exercised in a balanced manner can help build and strengthen the church.
